Much of my career has been spent building software for nonprofits. I joined donor management system Kindful in its early days and stayed through our acquisition by Bloomerang about seven years later. After that I continued my software engineering career in other sectors. Over time I realized that I missed building for nonprofits - a group that sometimes doesn't get first-class tools. As I surveyed the landscape (and maybe geeked out on some data), I found something interesting.
Why this?
I personally support a number of organizations whose missions I care about. Individiual donations are meaningful and crucial, but they have their limits. There's only so much one person can give. I kept coming back to the question of how I could make a bigger impact.
As my career has progressed, I've gotten to know more people on the funding side of that equation: founders, investors, individuals giving through private foundations. The funding for good nonprofit work is out there. The challenge is the matchmaking.
Helping organizations find those funders seemed like a place I could help. The data to do that already exists; the IRS makes most of it public. Yet the tools to access it cost thousands of dollars per year. That always felt backwards to me.
501see is my attempt at fixing that. Search is free for anyone who needs it. Paid plans add workflows and automation for power users - with reasonable pricing and no enterprise contracts. Finding the right funding partners can change the trajectory of an organization, and I'm delighted I can help make that happen.
